How does AI transform the writing industry?

In the past decade, AI and Machine Learning have developed exponentially. In just a few years we have entered the AI era. With this short time span, AI ability has proved to be so close to humans that they can do most tasks that were once impossible, including creative works such as writing and drawing.

The advanced development of AI has shaken the belief that no matter what, AI can not do creative works such as writing articles and novels. However, this was proven wrong with the example of GPT-3 from OpenAI, which produced various kinds of writings. It has the ability to elaborate the full story from just one given sentence. A few years ago, Japanese researchers created an AI that wrote a short story and won a writing competition. Apart from that, researchers all around the world continue to develop AI and Machine Learning writers. We can say AI is making its mark in the writing and publishing industry.

Natural Language Processing (NLP) allows AI to learn human languages and produce human-like creative works. Besides, its algorithm can learn and categorise a huge amount of information in a short amount of time. AI can collect and analyse research, news, and articles that are sources of their writing, with the amount and accuracy that are improbable to humans. Another point that AI makes mincemeat of us is speed. AI never has to rest. It can work 24 hours a day and start working immediately without having to take time to generate ideas. Thousands of articles per week are not out of reach for AI. Especially with SEO articles, AI knows best how to select and optimise keywords. They are far more advanced than us in this area. Now, there are many AI software developed mainly for SEO assistance. These are the reasons why informative articles or news are not beyond AI ability anymore.

Although it seems like AI can do everything, it can not. We have seen novels and short stories produced purely by AI, yet the content and storylines of those novels are not reasonable and realistic. The reason? AI still lacks one of the main components that give aesthetic quality to the writing; human sentiment and memories. No matter how hard it tries, AI still can not imitate human emotions. Writing touching stories needs beautiful wordings that convey the author's thoughts and emotions. It also needs storylines developed from human experience, and characters that have a depth of human nature. Despite being able to learn from all types of information, AI can not develop its human-like depth, attitude, and sentiments. This is a limitation that impedes AI from completely taking over writing.

It may seem frightful for writers. But in another way, we can learn to utilise AI for our own understanding. We will get a chance to elevate our ability with the help of AI. For instance, If writers know AI benefits and employ it as assistance, using AI to do research or quality control can help improve their work quality. There are many tools specially developed to be of assistance for writers. If we learn how to pick up and utilise these technologies, we will grow alongside AI.
